As with all changelings, Kevin's tale begins with his parents, how they met, and which one isn't human. In Kevin's case his parents met for the first time during a cruise. His mother, Miriam was the one actually aboard the cruise ship. The ship came across a bout of bad luck in the form of a power outage, a very violent storm, and an unfortunate and unusually violent school of sharks. At least that was the explanation the humans later came up with. The power outage and storm were indeed real, but the sharks were a raging group of Siyokoy, monstrous man-eating mermen of Philippine folklore. Miriam was washed overboard, she was terrified and flailing. That was when Magtanggol, one of the plundering Siyokoy caught sight of the young woman. Something happened when he laid eyes upon her, they say Names hold power, and magtanggol means to defend. He saw a potential mate and so food was the furthest thing from his mind. Magtanggol not only rescued the girl but fought off his fellow Siyokoy who tried to snatch her away.

Magtanggol took on human form and returned her to the ship, giving up on the frenzy to charm and court her in the aftermath. He borrowed the identity of one of the lost souls of the carnage and somehow, a relationship grew from there. A long distance relationship, Miriam would often return to Magtanggol, but the Siyokoy was vehemently against leaving his homeland to do the same. In the end, instinct won out and he left Miriam soon after she became pregnant.
